On the night of October 9, the Russian army launched a drone strike in the Odessa region , causing a fire in one of the ports, with casualties.

According to a UNIAN correspondent, the air raid siren continued overnight for several hours. Explosions were heard in Odesa, and suburban residents reported on social media that they also heard air defense systems operating. Monitoring channels reported that “Shahed” missiles were approaching from the sea, circling over various areas. Witnesses subsequently reported seeing “large fires.”

As UNIAN was informed by the press service of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office, on the night of October 8-9, Russian armed forces attacked the Odesa district with attack drones. In the city of Chornomorsk, massive enemy shelling damaged power facilities, as well as facilities in the port area. Six nearby private homes were damaged by the shelling and fire. Four villages remain without power. According to the press service of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office, five people were injured and are being treated in the hospital. An investigation has been launched into allegations of war crimes (Part 1, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The prosecutor’s office later clarified to UNIAN that the victims were 33, 58, 51, 54, and 68 years old.

Mayor Vasily Gulyayev reported the attack on the city of Chornomorsk. He said critical infrastructure is currently running on generators, and the community is without power, with the exception of the village of Burlachya Balka.

According to the regional press service of the State Emergency Service , the drone attack resulted in the fires of two residential buildings and the administrative building of a gas station. A large-scale fire also broke out at a port infrastructure facility, involving containers containing vegetable oil, vehicles, and wood pellets.

A total of 83 rescuers participated in extinguishing the fires, using 18 units of fire-fighting equipment and a fire robot, as well as 4 volunteers and a fire truck.

According to updated data from the head of the Odessa Regional State Administration, Oleg Kiper , most enemy targets were destroyed by air defense forces, but there was damage to civilian, port, and energy infrastructure.

“The attack caused fires in two private homes, the administrative building of a gas station, and the port. Four more private homes were damaged…. More than 30,000 customers were left without power,” the official reported.

According to him, the State Emergency Service and emergency services are still dealing with the aftermath.

Attacks in the Odessa region

As a reminder, in late September, Russia attacked railway infrastructure in the Odesa region with drones , causing damage. There were no casualties among railway workers or passengers. Due to the attack, all passenger trains were stopped at a safe distance from the impact sites. Several trains were delayed. In particular, the Odesa-Holovna-Kyiv-Passenger train was delayed by almost four hours, and the return train from Kyiv-Passenger to Odesa-Holovna was delayed by three hours.

  1. Odessa really needs a superior air defense system. They’re just too close to the front lines and is an objective of the orcs.
