Tsunami waves have already reached the coast of Japan.

A powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 in magnitude has struck off the coast of Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East, triggering a 4-metre-high tsunami and prompting evacuations across the Pacific Ocean, Reuters reports .

The shallow earthquake reportedly damaged buildings and injured several people.

Meanwhile, Japan, which suffered a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in 2011, announced an evacuation. Workers evacuated the Fukushima nuclear power plant, where a radioactive disaster occurred in 2011.

In Hawaii, coastal residents were advised to move to higher ground, to the fourth floor or higher, and the US Coast Guard ordered ships to leave ports as a tsunami approached.

“Take action! Destructive tsunami waves are expected,” the Honolulu Office of Emergency Management said.

Tsunami waves 3-4 meters high hit some areas of Kamchatka, partially flooding the port and fish processing plant in the city of Severo-Kurilsk. The water also swept away ships from their moorings.

The earthquake is reported to be the strongest in decades.

The US Geological Survey says the quake was shallow, with its epicenter at a depth of 19.3 km.

A resident of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky told the agency that the tremors began slowly, but gradually increased and continued for several minutes.

Earthquakes in Kamchatka

Kamchatka is one of the most seismically active regions of Russia and the world. The peninsula is located in the zone of interaction of two lithospheric plates. This tectonic collision makes the region prone to frequent tremors.

Earthquakes in Kamchatka occur regularly. The magnitude of the tremors can vary from imperceptible to destructive. Especially dangerous are earthquakes that occur in the coastal zone – they can provoke a tsunami, threatening populated areas and coastal infrastructure.
