The ship sank on the night of August 1 in the Black Sea 130 miles from Novorossiysk.

The container ship “Ianina” of the Fesco company (part of Rosatom) sank in the Black Sea after an attack by naval drones .

This is reported by Russian media , citing a statement by the head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev.

He stated that the ship sank on the night of August 1 in the Black Sea 130 miles from Novorossiysk as a result of an attack by two Ukrainian naval drones.

All 17 crew members were rescued.

At the same time, the head of Rosatom claims that it was an “ordinary peaceful vessel” transporting civilian products.

“This was an ordinary peaceful container ship moving in international waters and transporting civilian products – from frozen foods to construction and finishing materials. Such an attack cannot be interpreted otherwise than as piracy and maritime robbery,” he said.

According to Astra, citing data on the FESCO website, the container ship “FESCO Ioannina” was accepted into the company’s fleet in September 2021. The length of the vessel is 142 meters, width is 22 meters, deadweight is 13,007 tons, capacity is 962 TEU. The container ship’s crew consists of 14 people.

Updated at 2:00 p.m. Zelenskyy showed a video showing a drone approaching a Russian ship.

“The Russian container ship “Yanina”, which was under sanctions and sailed under the Russian flag and had a capacity of over 100 thousand tons, was destroyed. Thanks to the accuracy of our Defense Forces, it went to the bottom,” the president wrote.
