A former Lithuanian commander-in-chief said Merkel urged Ukrainian authorities not to resist the seizure of Crimea in 2014.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel allegedly influenced the Ukrainian authorities’ decision not to offer armed resistance during the Russian seizure of Crimea in 2014.
Jonas Vytautas Zukas, former Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces (2014-2019) and the country’s representative to NATO, states this in his book, Welt reports .
According to Zukas, he was in Kyiv during the occupation of Crimea and met with acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov. Turchynov allegedly explained the lack of resistance by saying it happened “at Merkel’s request in a telephone conversation.”
Merkel’s office declined to comment on specific statements, noting the former chancellor’s previous public statements and her memoir, “Freedom.”

My recollection is that both Obama and MerkelnaZi advised to offer no resistance.

Ukraine was in an impossibly weak situation in early 2014. They had only 5000 trained combat troops.
After the election of Poro, he rebuilt the army from scratch; with some of his own money.
But no money came from anywhere else, so he could only manage 140,000 troops.
His replacement; Zel, also had no money and could not build from there.
However, in late 2021/early 2022, he began to rebuild. There are now thought to be 500,000 combat troops on the frontline, with another 400,000 spread out elsewhere.
As I often say, in order to take back and hold land, Ukraine needs a standing army of 2 million.
