If Russia decides to continue the war against Ukraine, the United States will have to consider abandoning its peace negotiation efforts.
This was stated by Acting Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN John Kelly during a meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday, May 29, Interfax-Ukraine reports, Censor.NET informs .
“If Russia makes the wrong decision to continue this catastrophic war, the United States will have to consider abandoning our negotiating efforts to end this conflict. To be clear, in doing so, we are not abandoning our principles or our friends. Rather, we are recognizing Russia’s refusal to cooperate with us to achieve the desired outcome,” the diplomat said.
Kelly stressed that if Russia and Ukraine are truly interested in peace, the United States will work with both sides, with European partners , and with the UN to help achieve that goal, starting with a meaningful ceasefire.
“But we will insist that the discussion of peace issues by both sides be conducted in good faith,” said the US representative to the Security Council.
He also added that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin should accept the peace deal.
“The deal that is being proposed now is the best possible outcome for Russia. President Putin must make a deal,” Kelly said.
The diplomat said the US is calling on “both Russia and Ukraine to make the difficult, historic decision to pursue peace.”
“If one side proves unable or unwilling to do so, it will be held responsible for the consequences,” Kelly added.
It was previously reported that on Thursday, May 29, the UN Security Council will hold a meeting to discuss the security situation in the context of full-scale Russian aggression. The meeting is being convened at the request of Ukraine.
