Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced that his country will take on the coordination of international assistance for the construction of 10,000 bomb shelters throughout Ukraine.
As Censor.NET reports with reference to ZN.UA, he announced this on July 10 during the International Conference on the Restoration of Ukraine, which took place in Rome.
Finland has become the lead country in the Civil Protection Coalition, which is to ensure the implementation of a long-term plan to create an effective and large-scale system of protective infrastructure. According to the statement of the Civil Protection Coalition, these measures must comply with Ukraine’s internal security standards.
The conference also presented an updated program of cooperation between Finland and Ukraine until 2028. Prime Minister Orpo recalled his recent visit to Kyiv, noting that, despite the ongoing war, Ukrainians demonstrate faith in a better future and determination for renewal.
“It’s not just about rebuilding what was destroyed, but about restarting – creating new opportunities for the country and its citizens,” he said.
The Prime Minister of Finland also said that several tools have already been implemented to involve Finnish enterprises in the post-war reconstruction . As part of this process, new quality standards are being introduced and Ukraine’s course towards European integration is being supported.
“We are already seeing the first examples of investments from Finnish companies, and this interest is only growing,” Orpo concluded.
As a reminder, in May, Ukraine and Finland signed a joint statement on the launch of the Shelter Coalition. It is planned to attract about 14 billion euros in resources for the development of shelters.
Finland has considerable experience in this area, as the country has been actively developing civil defense since the 1950s, including the construction of shelters that can accommodate up to 4 million people in densely populated areas. These shelters are designed to protect against military threats, explosions, radiation and other hazards, and can also be used in peacetime as multifunctional facilities (parking lots, gyms, etc.).
