An explosion and a large-scale fire broke out at the Danube Refinery in the city of Sazhalombatta, owned by MOL and receiving crude oil from Russia . The fire has been contained, there are no casualties, and the causes of the accident are being investigated.

Fire at the Danube Oil Refinery

The Danube Oil Refinery is located 27 kilometers from Budapest.

According to Hungarian oil company MOL, which owns the facility, the fire broke out on the evening of October 20 after an explosion. Firefighters managed to contain the fire on the morning of October 21. No deaths or injuries were reported.

Complaints about the stench

Authorities assured that there was no threat to residents of surrounding communities and that air pollution levels were under control. Before that, many people on social media complained about the stench.

“On Monday evening, the smell of oil on the M6 ​​highway near Sazhalombatta was unbearable. Much worse than at the gas station. It was already noticeable that something was wrong,” one user noted on Facebook.

Meanwhile, a resident of the town of Erd, on the outskirts of Budapest, said he woke up to the sound of an explosion and saw the sky red with flames.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. The plant in Sázsállombátt is considered the largest and most modern in Hungary’s oil refining industry. It is supplied with oil from Russia. It may now temporarily stop working.

According to Hungarian media, a similar incident at an oil refinery occurred in July, when black smoke poured from the facility.
