BREAKING NEWS: A little more time for Putin: the US Congress made a statement regarding new sanctions against Russia

At least until September, Russia has completely free rein.

The US Congress will not consider bills on new sanctions against Russia until the ultimatum issued to Russia by US President Donald Trump has expired , House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters, as quoted by Reuters .

“I think the House and the Senate agree that, given that the White House has given this 50-day deadline, we need to let the commander in chief, the administration, the secretary of defense and the Pentagon do what they’re going to do, and we’ll see how it goes,” Johnson said.

As Reuters notes, some members of Congress continue to push for tougher sanctions against Russia, including a bill to impose a 500 percent tariff on goods from countries that buy Russian oil. The bill was shelved after Trump issued an ultimatum to Russia, threatening to impose a 100 percent tariff on Russia’s trading partners.

Republican leaders in both houses of Congress have said they will not bring any sanctions bill to a vote without Trump’s approval.

“We need peace there. This has been going on for too long. Too many innocent people are dying. And we don’t want any further American interference in this at all,” said Mike Johnson.

Trump’s ultimatum to Putin: latest news

As UNIAN wrote, after Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Putin, demanding that he stop the war within 50 days or receive new, powerful sanctions, European politicians relaxed too much , as if the war was already over.

We also reported that the US Permanent Representative to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, stated the need to punish China for “subsidizing” Russian aggression against Ukraine.
