Now the Brazilian authorities are negotiating with the UN to grant the dictator immunity.

Brazilian authorities are making efforts to organize the arrival of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), into the country. This was reported by the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo .

According to her, the administration of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wants to see Putin at the G20 summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in November. The main obstacle to such a visit is the arrest warrant for Putin, since Brazil recognizes the jurisdiction of the ICC and is therefore formally obliged to arrest the Russian dictator.

As journalists have found out, the Brazilian government is currently negotiating with the UN to officially grant all government leaders immunity from prosecution during their visits abroad. The newspaper notes that the Brazilian government’s proposal sent to the UN does not directly mention Putin, but refers to a scenario “that corresponds to the current situation of the Russian leader.”VIDEO OF THE DAYPlay Video

Arrest warrant for Putin

As UNIAN wrote, in March last year, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and Russian Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova on charges of organizing mass deportations of children from Ukraine. In theory, all countries that have ratified the Rome Statute (Brazil among them) are obliged to execute the order if the defendants appear on their territory. 

Last August, Vladimir Putin decided not to go to the BRICS summit in South Africa, which is also a signatory to the Rome Statute. Putin’s plans to attend the G20 summit in Brazil have also not yet been reported.
