The EU authorities have proposed imposing sanctions against the chairman of the board of directors of the National Media Group, Alina Kabaeva, writes Bloomberg, citing the draft EU sanctions list and several sources.
The draft states that the “National Media Group” owns shares in Russian media that distribute state propaganda, and therefore is responsible for supporting actions that undermine the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Kabaeva is “closely linked to [Russian] President Vladimir Putin,” the document says.
The new sanctions list must be approved by representatives of all EU member states. Ambassadors of European countries will hold a meeting on this occasion on May 7. The final version of the sanctions list may still change, Bloomberg notes.
At the end of April, sources for The Wall Street Journal said that the US authorities had prepared a package of sanctions against Alina Kabaeva, but had postponed its implementation for the time being, fearing that Vladimir Putin would react “aggressively.”
According to the publication, US authorities believe that Kabaeva is the mother of “at least three children” of Putin and that she may play an important role “in concealing Putin’s personal fortune abroad.”
