Now all Lithuania’s demand for gas is met by the Klaipeda liquefied natural gas terminal.

Lithuania has decided not to import any more natural gas from Russia, thus becoming the first among the EU countries to completely abandon Russian gas.

This is reported by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania.

“In an effort to gain complete energy independence from Russian gas, in response to Russia’s energy blackmail in Europe and the war in Ukraine, Lithuania has completely abandoned Russian gas: since the beginning of this month, the Lithuanian gas transportation system has been operating without Russian gas imports,” the report says.

Now all Lithuania’s demand for gas is met by the Klaipeda liquefied natural gas terminal. For the next period, customers placed orders for gas transportation only from the terminal. If necessary, gas can also be supplied to Lithuania through the gas connection with Latvia, and from May 1 through the gas network with Poland.

Energy Minister Dainius Kreivis stressed that this is a turning point in the history of Lithuanian energy independence:

“We are the first EU country among Gazprom’s supplier countries that has ensured independence from Russian gas supplies, and this is the result of long-term consistency, energy policy and timely infrastructure solutions,” he said.

Russian energy blackmail in Europe

On March 23, the president of the aggressor country, Putin, announced that the Russian Federation had decided to  accept payment for gas supplied to Europe  in Russian rubles.

Under these conditions, Russia’s demand to pay for gas in rubles becomes meaningless, since Lithuania no longer orders Russian gas and is not going to pay for it. In response, the Russian gas supply company Gazprom told Amber Grid that it no longer intends to import gas from Russia through the Lithuanian-Belarusian connection.

Transit gas through Lithuania continues to be transported for the needs of Koenigsberg, but in a different technical regime than usual, ensuring the transfer of only the necessary amount of gas for transit.
