Billionaire Trump Donor Peter Thiel Backs Down: ‘A Lot Of Things I Got Wrong’

The tech investor said the former president was not happy with him.

Nov 10, 2023

Tech investor Peter Thiel, who was a major donor to Donald Trump in 2016 and played a role on Trump’s White House transition team, said he’s not giving money to the former president or anyone else this time around.

“Voting for Trump was like a not very articulate scream for help,” the billionaire told The Atlantic in a Thursday profile.

Thiel, who co-founded PayPal and Palantir, donated $1.25 million to Trump and Trump-affiliated super PACs in 2016 and spoke on Trump’s behalf at the Republican National Convention that year.

But he told The Atlantic that things didn’t turn out the way he’d hoped.

“There are a lot of things I got wrong,” he acknowledged. “It was crazier than I thought. It was more dangerous than I thought. They couldn’t get the most basic pieces of the government to work. So that was—I think that part was maybe worse than even my low expectations.”

Thiel told the magazine that he had no regrets. But he didn’t contribute to Trump in 2020, according to The Atlantic, and suggested that he wouldn’t donate to any 2024 Republican candidate, including Trump as he seeks to retake the White House.

Thiel said Trump had called him earlier this year looking for $10 million, similar to what Thiel had given Blake Masters and J.D. Vance for their recent Senate races.

Thiel turned him down, according to The Atlantic, and heard later on that Trump had called him a “fucking scumbag.”

  1. “… Trump had called him a “fucking scumbag.”

The narcissist Trump is not only a big mouth and sore loser, he’s also quick to act like a juvenile when things don’t go his way. I’m glad that one major donor has seen the light, concerning the orange one’s presidential campaign.

    • Review lists it as left to moderate. Mixed on factual. Seeing how this one was mostly direct quotes from his interview with the Atlantic there wasn’t much to twist. Review also says it MAY use some of the things listed, doesn’t mean always. Considering rt is state run kremkrap I wouldn’t compare it to the free press.

    • Red, the original story was taken from The Atlantic. It was also published on Reuters, Business Insider and The Hill.
Okay, so the quote is hearsay. However, the most important thing about all that is; “Tech billionaire Peter Thiel, who previously supported former President Trump, said the Trump administration was “crazier” and “more dangerous” than he expected…”

Like I said before, Red, if you could give me something that shows Trump in a different light, in particular about Ukraine support, then I promise you that I will officially apologize on here and I will never pick on the orange one again. I won’t even call him names anymore. Until then, your bias toward him is a deep mystery to me, but I respect it.

      • Red is as if bewitched, as if in love: the judgment zone in his brain is inhibited. trump can say he grabs women by the pussy buying whores with campaign money and say he could kill someone without going to jail…Red isn’t even shocked! trump can mess around with the Iranian nuclear deal (which is damaging women’s revolts now) he can be a fool with Rocketman (Iran-North Korea-Russia axis), he can confuse Erdogan and Orban, Hungary and Turkey …there is no problem because Trump is his superhero.
… Red is like those who say since the American camp has done dirty tricks then the Russian camp has the right to do the same and mistreat the Ukrainians… He favors his family group with the eyes of the love 😉

      • From Scradge’s article today:
“30 progressive Democrats in the House of Representatives sent a letter to the U.S. President Joe Biden last year asking the president to pursue a ceasefire in Ukraine”
Interesting there isn’t much reporting on them, just the GOP.

        • Of course, even the Democrats have blind and dumb individuals who don’t seem to care about the tremendous negative consequences that a mafia victory brings with it.
BTW, Red, I’m still a Republican.

        • It was fully reported. Plus the fact that they were forced to retract. Even the worst ones voted for Ukraine aid.
The terrible threat to Ukraine comes exclusively front the putler wing of the GOP.
Unless some deal can be made, the aid will stop.
I have no idea if this final big tranche prior to the election will be paid out or not. Have you?

          • 95% of the GOP want the help to continue but a chunk of idiots want it paid for in offsets. I’m sure it will pass eventually, they’re backed up against another CR next month.
By the way, with 30+ Congressmen pushing for negotiations, that is more of a threat than some right wingers insisting on having the aid paid for in offsets or frozen funds if you ask Ukrainians.
