Instead of restraining Putin, Joe Biden is allowing the Russians to restrain the United States, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The decision of the United States to refuse Ukraine to receive MiG-29 fighters from Poland was made personally by President Joe Biden. He vetoed the delivery of these aircraft so as not to provoke Vladimir Putin into an escalation of the war.
This is stated in an editorial in The Wall Street Journal .
“The logic seems to be that sending deadly anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons will not provoke the Russians, but 28 aircraft will. sending less lethal planes will lead to World War III, but not weapons that are actually lethal?” writes the WSJ.
The publication notes that such a solution is a bigger problem and sends Putin a signal about NATO.
“The essence of credible deterrence is to make the enemy believe that certain actions will lead to a response. By defiantly not sending troops and saying that the reason for this is fear of escalation, Mr. Biden is telling Putin what he should not worry about. Instead, to contain Putin, Biden allows the Russians to contain the US.
The publication notes that such behavior is becoming natural for the current US president.
“In Afghanistan, he demanded a quick exit by a certain date so as not to provoke the Taliban, who seized power. The result was an American humiliation that could influence Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine,” writes the WSJ.
Also this month, the Biden administration canceled a planned test of a US nuclear missile after Putin expressed a vague nuclear threat. The tests had nothing to do with Ukraine, and Russia knew about it, but the Pentagon stopped them anyway. “This is another blow to the credibility of US containment,” the article says.
Meanwhile, Putin is stepping up his offensive against Ukraine anyway. Thus, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov admitted on Thursday that the Russians deliberately attacked the maternity hospital in Mariupol. “Putin knows what NATO won’t do to stop him,” the WSJ notes.
