Biden is considering transferring ammunition from the US Army’s own reserves to the Armed Forces, – NYT

Unlike previous aid packages, this time the US military will not receive automatic compensation for the purchase of new shells from industry.

Such a move would be a short-term measure to help Ukraine’s armed forces until Congress breaks the months-long impasse and approves a larger package of military aid to Ukraine, officials said.

“That’s what I know is on the table,” said Democratic Sen. Jack Reid, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee. Mr. Reid, who recently returned from Ukraine, said he would support such an interim measure “to buy time.”

Currently, the Pentagon has the authority to transfer weapons to Ukraine from its own stockpiles in the total amount of about 4 billion dollars. But in December, a separate fund ran out, at the expense of which the Pentagon could immediately replenish its own reserves, compensating for what was transferred to the Ukrainians. Since then, official Washington did not dare to risk the readiness of the American military and deprive them of part of their warehouse stocks for the sake of supporting Ukraine.

“That thinking is changing, largely because of Ukraine’s increasingly dire situation on the battlefield. Western officials and analysts say that Ukrainian ground forces are outnumbered [the enemy] in terms of personnel and weapons, lack artillery, anti-aircraft weapons and other munitions, and they are in perhaps their most dangerous position since the first months of the war,” the NYT writes.

However, some officials fear that the transfer of ammunition to Ukraine at the expense of US military reserves will only reduce pressure on Congress and reduce the chances of passing a new program of long-term aid to Kyiv.

It would also expose the Biden administration to criticism from Republicans, who will accuse the White House of harming the United States amid rising global military tensions.

  1. Way overdue. We have the most advanced nukes. And we are safe on a separate contintent from ruSSian and chinese ground troops.

    • Americans, including my two daughters living in Dixie, we can truly make America great again, powerful again! Just support Nikki Haley instead of the yankee bitches!

  2. Considering, like about sending Abrams tanks or Himars? This can take months at Biden’s slow speed of thinking! Can’t that guy simply do the right thing on short notice, for once? This really isn’t that hard! 😳

  3. Biden can make quick decisions: What kind of ice cream flavour he wants, takes hardly half a hour at the counter………………

    • “…some officials fear that the transfer of ammunition to Ukraine at the expense of US military reserves will only reduce pressure on Congress and reduce the chances of passing a new program of long-term aid to Kyiv.”

More proof that politics has entered into foreign policy and both sides are guilty.

      • It said “some officials” without naming a source. Hardly an apples to apples comparison considering we don’t even know what side of the coin said unnamed officials are on Sir RSM. 😉

          • Yes.
You should be working for the OSCE or the German ministry of foreign affairs.
They are also good at saying “we urge both sides to adhere to the Minsk agreements” while obviously only one side is the problem.

You are good at whataboutism and trying to shift the blame on other parties than Johnson and your orange boyfriend.

In this case, it is obviously just Johnson and the MAGA wing stalling the aid package without any clarity on what compromise they expect.

You could call it politics, but I would rather call it common sense to think twice before using these emergency funds as they basically give Ukraine just scraps which will not make a significant difference on the battlefield, while this takes away some of the pressure on Johnson to send the bill to the Congress.

You could have said: “C’mon Johnson, just send the bill” but instead you are trying to seize every opportunity to shift blame while not paying any attention to what actually is the problem.

I haven’t heard you complaining a single time about the Republicans having Ukrainians killed en masse and causing Ukraine to lose Addiyivka while not leaving any opportunity untouched to bombard Republicans which baseless accusations.

You are an adult man, but for some reason you do not have the guts to simply admit you are wrong about something as you are too proud and too afraid of shame. You just keep attacking others and ignoring everything that doesn’t support your case, waiting for it to blow over and then start the whole thing over and over again.

No one here would deny Biden fucked up by sending too little weapons too late and communicating poorly about objectives, why this is important for the U.S. and probably also letting Putin read his cards just before the invasion.

No one here has any problem recognizing this, regardless on whether they are liberal or conservative.

But even saying Johnson, an ally of Trump, is stalling a bill which deprives Ukraine of aid which is of existential importance is something your little ego cannot cope with. Instead, you point fingers at the other side “that is playing politics too”.

In fact, they do not have any control over what Johnson does or doesn’t. They give in to basically all his demands, but this didn’t cause any movement.

You are an adult man, grow some balls and just admit you are wrong instead of attacking others all the time

Admitting you’re wrong is not a sign of weakness, but the most manly thing to do. You show you are adapting, learning and have a mind on your own instead of blindly following some guy.

          • Your trumpian deflection is beneath you Sir RSM. Politics at times is like trying to pin point a particle, you can see where it was, but not where it is.

            • Deflection? Think about your words very carefully Bill. I thought you were more respectful than that. I’m not deflecting from anything and to call me trumpian is immature.
The politics comes from those that say they want to continue putting pressure on Congress by withholding this $4B. So who is that? The Republicans are trying to keep pressure on Republicans? Use your fucking head man…
You motherfuckers are chasing me out of my own fucking website. No respect at all for what i’m fucking doing for Ukraine. None. I try to keep myself out of that role but I thought I would remind you. You selfrightous Leftists can’t even use your head nor your heart. Your fucking politics blinds you and reduces you to insults to real people trying to be fair and you don’t even see it. No wonder you people destroy everything you touch. You have no tolerance, no respect and no consideration for different opinions.

              • In case you haven’t noticed, GOP is divided. So yes it could be Republicans against taking pressure off of Ukraine aids immediate passage.
You protest so loudly when anonymous sources are used but then you use it in your self-imposed quest to defend the vain of conservativism. It is to such a degree you seem to even consider other branches of Republican conservatives as too liberal or extreme.
Granted if it was not for you and others this platform would not exist. It is still your website if you are wanting things to go in a different direction as far as what is discussed in support of Ukraine, that is your prerogative. On most everything I’ve posted I have kept it to Ukrainian relevancy. (Admittedly some have been a bit of a stretch)🙂
For someone whom complains about people getting trashed, you sure can dole out some daggers.

              • Friend, brother. You keep defending Trump all the time. Spare that ammo for the day when (if) he finally delivers. And btw, it is OUR website. Me and Suzanna designed your logo and in 2015 we set up the first successor of Ukraine Today on Disqus. This is the site of all editors, although you keep paying the bills. 😂

Get some body armor and rise again from Red Square Maiden to Red Square Maidan! ✌😎

                • I’m not defending Trump, brother, I am defending fairness. My comments and opinions are no longer welcome here and I am tired of the insults. Yes, it is our website and I’ve always said that, but the insults are only to me so I will step aside and let the unfair partisans have their way. I give up, this site is no longer fair.

                  • What really is unfair is Ukraine not getting aid because of Johnson and your orange boyfriend, but you aren’t willing to acknowledge this simple fact.

There is nothing fair about your comments. Basically all your comments are whataboutism and deflection, often based on conspiracy theories on Biden.

I know you created the website but that doesn’t mean you can just attack others and then be a cry baby when people call you out.

And stop calling us partisans: I am not even American and I think most of us here would choose Nikki Haley over Biden as she is the most avid supporter of Ukraine, including me.

And she is not a leftist or a liberal, but mostly a Reagan-style Republican.

I think no one on this website is really partisan and criticize both liberals and conservatives when they throw Ukraine at the wolves, except for you.

                    ^bert

              • “The Republicans are trying to keep pressure on Republicans?”

Why not? There are many Republicans in this group who claim that the MAGAt Republicans aren’t “true” Republicans. It’s quite possible that the traditional anti-Russia, pro-strong-US Republicans want to put pressure on the MAGAt pro-Trump, pro-Putin, “America first and screw the rest of the world” Republicans.

“chasing me out of my own fucking website.”

Nobody’s trying to chase you out.

“You have no tolerance, no respect and no consideration for different opinions.”

I have lots of tolerance for different opinions, but not for “alternative facts”.

  4. Here we go again. Just like since the beginning of this war; considering, contemplating, thinking of, leaning toward, deliberating, might, could, should…

  5. But ultimately won’t make a decision and execute it until it is too late to make a significant difference on the front lines……

    So sad, but true.
