The USA became the 17th country to sign a security agreement with Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 10-year security agreement between the US and Ukraine , Reuters reports .

“The parties recognize this agreement as support for a bridge to Ukraine’s possible membership in the NATO alliance,” the text says.

In the event of an armed attack or threat of such an attack on Ukraine, senior US and Ukrainian officials will meet within 24 hours to consult on countermeasures and determine what additional defense needs Ukraine needs, the agreement says.

According to the agreement, the United States reiterates its support for Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity against the backdrop of renewed Russian pressure on Ukraine’s eastern front.

“To ensure the security of Ukraine, both sides recognize that Ukraine needs significant armed forces, powerful potential and constant investment in a defense industrial base that meets the standards of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO),” the text states.

It is noted that the United States intends to provide long-term material, training, consulting, intelligence, security, defense-industrial, institutional and other support for the development of Ukrainian security and defense forces capable of defending a sovereign, independent, democratic Ukraine and deterring future aggression.

What is important to know about the deal

At the same time, as the White House explained the day before, the document does not include any commitments from Washington to use its forces to defend Ukraine. It also does not contain any monetary obligations for the American side.

As The Washington Post points out , since the agreement will not be ratified by Congress, any future US president will be able to withdraw from it if he wishes. If Trump wins the election, the future agreement remains unclear.

  1. This agreement is not even half arsed, it’s a disgrace by Biden. He has the power to make this into a treaty between Ukraine and the US. This would be ratified by the Senate, and would become law, making it bullet proof against any future administrations trying to rip it up. This was courtesy of Prof Gerdes, who knows US law more than I do.

  2. Yes just a photo op for Biden and Zelensky with the signed paper being meaningless and has no impact in the real world. Not submitted and approved as treaty in the Senate – its meaningless. Congress has sole control of approving any required funding and this signed agreement is not in the least binding to any future administrations, Democrat or Republican.

If Biden was serious he should be pushing Nato to accept Ukraine as a member.
