Belarus Opposition Leader Urges EU to Reject Election Results

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Wednesday urged EU leaders to reject the results of the presidential election which sparked massive protests and saw strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko claim a sixth term.

“I call on you not to recognize these fraudulent elections,” Tikhanovskaya said in a video addressed to the European Council, adding that “Lukashenko has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of our nation and the world.”

Belarus’s authoritarian leader, who has controlled the isolated ex-Soviet country for 26 years, claimed victory in the Aug. 9 election that sparked historic protests and a brutal police crackdown condemned by Western countries.

Tikhanovskaya’s appeal came ahead of an emergency video conference of European Union leaders on Wednesday to discuss the election fallout in Belarus.

EU leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel this week urged Belarus’s powerful ally Russia to lobby for dialogue in Minsk.

“The Aug. 9 elections were neither fair, nor transparent. The results were falsified,” the opposition leader said in the video address.

Tikhanovskaya, 37, has said she will organize new elections if Lukashenko steps down and her allies have formed a Coordination Council to ensure a transfer of power. The council is due to convene later on Wednesday.

Lukashenko, 65, has dismissed calls to resign or hold a new vote and has claimed the opposition is attempting to “seize power.”

Tikhanovskaya, a political novice who fled to neighboring Lithuania after claiming victory in the ballot, said Wednesday that the Coordination Council would “lead the process of peaceful transition of power via dialogue.

“It will immediately call for a new fair and democratic presidential election with international supervision.”

  1. “I call on you not to recognize these fraudulent elections,”

This lady has a lot to learn about the EU, if she reads this article, and scrolls down a little, she will see what the EU is all about.

EU leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel this week urged Belarus’s powerful ally Russia to lobby for dialogue in Minsk.

  2. The EU on Friday rejected the results of Belarus’ recent presidential elections, the bloc’s foreign policy chief announced Friday.

Following an extraordinary foreign ministers videoconference, Josep Borrell confirmed in a Twitter post that the top diplomats started the first steps to preparing a sanctions list.

Svetlana, they did already, as far as I understand.

  3. Why not demand from the US not to recognize the results? Canada already declared they don’t recognize the election results.

    • After what Trump said yesterday, I think we can forget about him doing anything remotely positive.

        • Compare them to quotes from John McCain.

“Vladimir Putin is an evil man, and he is intent on evil deeds, which include the destruction of the liberal world order that the United States has led and that has brought more stability, prosperity and freedom to humankind than has ever existed in history.”

“I have been an equal-opportunity skeptic of four administrations’ policies toward Russia. I’ve gotten plenty of things wrong in a long political career. Putin isn’t one of them.”

          • Sadly, until Americans elect a POTUS who shares John’s unequivocal position, Russia’s desperately unlucky neighbours and the civilised world in general, somehow have to find a way to coexist with the most evil person on this earth since the hitler/stalin era.

          • If Johnny would have won in 2008 we would live in a different world now. Same goes for Bob Dole in 1996 and Johnny in 2000. But most people are stupid and controlled by the mainstream media, which thinks for them and votes for them.

            • His wife has has just endorsed Biden! In the event of a Dem victory, we must hope that the reports of a much more proactive Ukraine policy turn out to be true and that the 30 year friendship that the two men enjoyed will have rubbed off on the old boy.
Look at the following list of the most vocal opponents of the rodent fuhrer and then look at the torrents of hate and bile that Trump directed at them. McCain, Romney, Rubio, Ted, Mattis, Bolton. Can’t be coincidence.

                • Maybe, just imagine had McCain won, then gone on to a second term. Ukraine would be a different place than it is now, and Muscovy would be back in it’s shithole.

                  • Sarah would have done a strip tease for Putin, while Johnny ‘d been waiting with a bazooka behind the door. Would have been a great time. But let’s not forget, internal treason in Ukraine got Putin where he is today, not just Obama. What could Johnny have done against the fact that the ukrainian military allowed the green men leave their bases and move into Crimea? Start bombing? And as long as the EU keeps crawling with Putin, US sanctions alone may not have been enough.

                    • The two people mostly responsible for the death and misery inflicted upon Ukraine since 2014 are Manafort and Stone of the consultancy firm Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly, who managed to convert the convicted armed robber and putlerite fifth columnist Yanukovich into an electable candidate and then used sophisticated black arts on an unsophisticated electorate to get him into power.
Trumpkov just got Stone off and likely intends to do the same with Manafort, Flynn and Snowden.
