Roskomnadzor (RKN) reported a “partial restriction” on the work of the Telegram and WhatsApp messengers.
The department stated that the measures were introduced to “counter criminals” based on materials from law enforcement agencies, The Moscow Times reports .
According to the RKN, these services are “concentrated” with scammers and individuals who extort money and “involve in sabotage and terrorist activities.” The messenger administrations, according to the agency, ignored the requirements to strengthen the fight against violations.
On October 20-21, Telegram and WhatsApp experienced large-scale outages. The day before, they affected the southern regions of the Russian Federation, including Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai, Adygea, and Astrakhan, and on Monday, problems were observed throughout the country.
