The Austrian Foreign Ministry demanded clarification from Russia over the refusal to issue a permit for a flight of Austrian Airlines from Vienna to Moscow to fly on a new route bypassing Belarus. This was reported by “Interfax” with reference to the statement of the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
We call on Russia to immediately clarify the situation and no longer interfere with free air traffic between Russia and Europe. It is in both Austrian and Russian interests – so that all flights to and through Russia and further pass without problems.
The Austrian Foreign Ministry added that they did not understand the Russian reaction and informed the Russian ambassador about it. “The Austrian ambassador to Moscow also expressed this position in Russia,” the Austrian Foreign Ministry said.
On the afternoon of May 27, an Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Moscow was canceled because Russia did not agree with the airline to change the route bypassing Belarus. For the same reason, the French Air France was forced to transfer its flight from Paris to Moscow for two days in a row.
Since May 24, a number of European countries have closed their airspace for the Belarusian airline “Belavia”, and their carriers were not recommended or banned from flying over Belarus. This happened due to an emergency landing in Minsk of a Ryanair plane.
