The Australian government said it had supplied M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a 245 million Australian dollar ($160 million) aid package to help the country defend itself against Russian aggression, Reuters reported .

“Australia, one of the largest non-NATO aid donors to Ukraine, has been supplying aid, ammunition, and defense equipment since Moscow invaded its neighbor’s territory in February 2022,” the publication recalled.

As noted by the country’s Defense Minister Richard Marles, Ukraine has received most of the 49 tanks from the state, the rest will be delivered in the coming months.

“The M1A1 Abrams tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s ongoing fight against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion,” the official assured.

Australia and the war in Ukraine – what is known

The government added that the tanks were part of the $980 million in aid that Canberra provided to Ukraine due to the war with Russia.

In addition, Australia banned the export of alumina and aluminum ores, including bauxite, to the Russian Federation and imposed sanctions against about 1,000 Russian individuals and legal entities.

Australia’s center-left Labor government also called Russia the aggressor in the conflict this year and called for a resolution of the war on Kyiv’s terms.

Meanwhile, in June it became known that  Australia had closed its ports to Russian tankers . It is noted that the country has imposed sanctions against 60 oil tankers of the “shadow fleet”, which Russia uses to sell oil in circumvention of international sanctions.

“Australia today (June 18 – UNIAN) adopted one of the largest sanctions decisions against the Russian military machine – 60 vessels of the so-called “tanker fleet”, which were used to circumvent oil sanctions and finance aggression, were subject to restrictions,” said Andriy Yermak, head of the Presidential Office.
