Federal Foreign Minister of Germany Annalena Burbock said that the supply of arms to Ukraine could jeopardize the negotiations in the Normandy format.
According to an UNIAN correspondent, Burbock said this during her speech at the Munich Security Conference.
First, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who is taking part in the conference, thanked Germany and the United States for their help, without which, as Klitschko said, Ukraine “cannot survive.” At the same time, the mayor of Kiev stressed that Ukraine now needs defensive weapons. He thanked Germany for financial assistance, which was directed to the restoration of infrastructure and reforms in Ukraine. “We are ready to fight. We are ready to defend our families, cities, citizens, but we need support. Thank you for 5,000 helmets, but this is not enough. We cannot defend our country only with this,” Klitschko said.
He also asked Annalena Burbock and Anthony Blinken if everyone had forgotten about the Budapest Memorandum.
In turn, Burbock said that the decision not to supply weapons to Ukraine was not easy for Germany.
“But if we jeopardize by taking such steps that the Normandy format will no longer work, in my opinion, this will be a very big security threat for every citizen in Ukraine, especially in connection with the situation on the line of contact in the separatist areas ( Russian militants – UNIAN) For every citizen there, it is crucial that we return to the negotiating table to discuss Minsk,” Burbock stressed.
At the same time, according to her, Germany is studying every request of Ukraine.
“Because we march side by side with you and your citizens. That’s why when you asked for helmets, we were looking at how many helmets we could supply. I’m sorry it was only 5,000. We now have a new list. We looking at a new list of what we have, what we can do, and I think it’s very good that we have a frank and open exchange on these things,” Burbock said.
She also said that it is necessary to prevent the destabilization of the situation inside Ukraine.
