Its anti-Western obsession has driven it into the gutter

STEPHEN POLLARD 6 August 2022 •

For anyone who has followed Amnesty International in recent years, its attack on Ukraine for daring to defend itself against Russia and thus “putting civilians at risk” was entirely in character. The organisation that was once a beacon of hope for political prisoners has become a de facto offshoot of Stop The War. It now operates with the same agenda as other groups on the fringes of extreme left politics, pushing the same hardcore anti-Western obsessions (infamously for some time even teaming up with Cage, the British Islamist group) but with more PR success than most, as it trades on its former reputation for good deeds.
According to Amnesty, Ukrainian forces in Kharkiv, Donbas and Mykolaiv have broken international law by operating from residential areas. “We have documented a pattern of Ukrainian forces putting civilians at risk and violating the laws of war when they operate in populated areas,” Agnes Callamard, its secretary general, wrote. No matter that the only reason the Ukrainian forces are in residential areas is to defend them from Russian invaders – who are murdering, torturing and capturing Ukrainian civilians. As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky put it in response, Amnesty is trying to “shift responsibility from the aggressor to the victim.”
The Russian Embassy in the UK greeted Amnesty’s “report” with glee, tweeting: “@Amnesty confirms #Ukraine tactics violate international humanitarian law & endanger civilians… exactly what #Russia has been saying all along. #StopNaziUkraine”
Just in case anyone might doubt where she stands, Ms Callamard responded to the dismantling of her slurs by the Ukrainian government by equating it with the Russian invaders – and, for good measure, dismissing Ukrainian ministers as trolls.
But it’s not just the Ukrainian government which has condemned Amnesty’s perversion of reality. So has Amnesty’s own Ukraine office. Oksana Pokalchuk, its head, has now resigned, saying Amnesty has become “an instrument of Russian propaganda”. When AI’s Ukraine staff complained about the draft report, they were ignored: “Our team’s arguments about the inadmissibility and incompleteness of such material were not taken into account. The representatives of the Ukrainian office did everything they could to prevent this material from being published.”
Like all good hard left outfits, Amnesty has been obsessed with Israel for years, In 2012, Kristyan Benedict, then the charity’s campaigns manager, took to Twitter to post a ‘joke’ about 3 Jewish MPs: “Louise Ellman, Robert Halfon and Luciana Berger walk into a bar…each orders a round of B52s … #Gaza”. How did Amnesty respond to one of its key staff posting something that was widely viewed as antisemitic? Mr Benedict was promoted and is now its ‘crisis response manager’.
In February, Amnesty published yet another report on Israel, this one claiming that it is an apartheid state. Typically, it was riddled with errors, both of fact and law. And who led the opposition to it? As in Ukraine, Amnesty’s own staff. Amnesty Israel’s executive director Molly Malekar described the Israel report as a “punch in the gut”, while its CEO Yariv Mohar said he was “shocked and angry” when he heard about its conclusions.
In other words, the central command of a hard left NGO produced propaganda that owes more to ideology than fact, only to be criticised by its own people on the ground – who understand the reality.
Amnesty is a worthless, morally bankrupt sham that gives succour to terrorist states. The sooner it collapses under the weight of its own distortions, the better.
Comment from Telegraph reader Carol Wills: “Where are their comments about the Russian invaders of a Sovereign nation and the rape and murder of young girls and women and the torture and murder of civilians and the daily / nightly bombing of the Ukrainian people and children. Where is their condemnation of the forced kidnapping and separating of families – children from their parents, wives from their husbands. Where is the condemnation? Silence.”
Jonathan Evans: “Back in the day, Amnesty International were great supporters of the IRA…..”
TJ James: “Horrifying to think there have been almost 10,000 civilian deaths/injuries not to mention 2m people displaced by Putins aggression (not to mention huge numbers of troop deaths on both sides). It’s that simple AI, without an invasion this loss of life wouldn’t have occurred. Putin is a war monger.”
Chris Balderston : “Amnesty International I’d forgotten how corrupt and leftist they were till Ukraine war started. Like a puppet of Putin.”
Puzzles Subscriber: “Amnesty International calls for peace talks, as does Corbyn. Marine Le Pen and the wife of Ireland’s very leftie President Michael D O’Higgins. Is Russia calling in favours ? No sensible person can possibly expect a nation that has been invaded, has seen its citizens murdered, raped and looted , its children kidnapped and so on to sue for peace. The only thing they can do is fight on.”

Time for a bonfire of the charities. The Marxist ones anyway.
Amnesty have committed a major war crime by acting as a component of putler’s genocide. Lock up their leaders and take their no doubt expensive homes; Marxists always live very well off other people’s money. In London they can always be seen dining in the most luxurious restaurants.
Despite being behind a paywall, Stephen’s excellent article is being republished all over the place; including LinkedIn; the site for professionals.
LinkedIn is a haven; many professionals in Ukraine, Europe and North America are using it as a platform to tell the truth about putler’s holocaust. Since all members, their employers and employees are vetted, it’s almost troll-free.
I hope and expect Amnesty International to just die. Hopefully taking the kremlin murder gang with it.
Is that Moskali filth still residing at the embassy in beautiful London? I hope someone plants a bunch of sunflowers there…Nazi sunflowers of course………..
It was beautiful when I lived there. Not so sure about now; unfortunately. It still has beautiful parks, galleries, museums, architecture and cultural activities though.
The RuZZian embassy is in a very nice part of the city. Like putting poisonous snakes in a flower garden. They also have their trade centre in choc box pretty Highgate, which is a den of spies. It’s located not far from the grave of Karl Marx; which ought to be obliterated.
As stated previously, there should be a coordinated action : Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, UK, US, Pribaltika, Canada, Poland should all shut down their riZZian embassies and break off all diplomatic relations.
I hope that now, people will see Amnesty International for what it really is. Its former high morals have been replaced by lies and Marxist dogmas. It should be completely disbanded.
