1. Maybe this is the problem in the US. No competition.

   Department of Defense (DoD) routinely worked with tens of thousands of vendors. However, during the early 1970s, the aerospace and defense sector was composed of about 75 major firms, and the industry included approximately 15 publicly traded Fortune 100 prime aerospace/defense companies.

   While the DoD contracted with vast numbers of businesses, the top 100 prime contractors consistently dominated the space, capturing roughly 72% of the total dollar volume for military procurement.

   This era was a localized peak for the number of competitors. In the decades that followed (particularly starting with the “Last Supper” meetings of the 1990s), massive corporate consolidation reduced these dozens of major aerospace and defense companies into just a handful of primary “mega-contractors”

   • Thirty or so years ago, there was a minor scandal about the U.S. Air Force paying $600 for aircraft toilet seats. How much would this be in today’s dollars?
     Nothing at all has changed since then, unless you count things getting worse.
