Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has died in jail, the Yamal-Nenets autonomous district prison service announced Friday.
“The inmate A.A.Navalny felt bad after a walk and almost immediately lost consciousness at the correctional colony No. 3 on Feb. 16,” Russia’s prison service said.
“Medical staff arrived immediately, an ambulance was called. All necessary resuscitation efforts did not yield results,” it added.
Navalny’s exiled spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said she could not confirm the prison service’s announcement until his lawyer visits the IK-3 prison colony in the settlement of Kharp.
His lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, said the activist’s family had instructed him to avoid commenting on “anything at all.”
“We’re sorting things out right now. A lawyer had visited Alexei on Wednesday. Everything was fine then,” Solovyov told the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow had been informed about Navalny’s reported death, according to the state-run news agency RIA Novosti.
When asked about unconfirmed reports the jailed activist may have died from a blood clot, Peskov said medics should establish the cause of his death.
Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, announced “a set of investigative and operative measures” to establish the circumstances surrounding Navalny’s death.

I know his cause of death, it goes by the name of putler. Not that Navalny will be missed, he was no friend of Ukraine.

He had a big intellect with a razor-sharp wit skilled in the theatre of the absurd. His satirical video about the “putler palace” was a masterpiece of its kind. But of course it did for him.
I was not a fan because of his imperialism and use of derogatory words about Ukrainians and Georgians. Nevertheless he was a real man, not a poisonous toad like putler.
Unless there is some strong action taken, two more high profile victims of putler; Mikhail Saakashvili and Vladimir Kara-Murza will die also.
Nobody will take action because of one man being murdered, nobody takes action over 100s being murdered every day by putler’s orcs
Yeah, Scradge1, the EU needs to apply pressure on the Georgian government to pardon Saakashvili. It must have been made crystal clear that there can’t be any chance for joining the European community when there’s so outrageous human rights abuses. Georgia needs to decide now on which sides it’s on. This shouldn’t be a hard choice. Even puppeteer Ivanishvili, who’s pulling the strings of power, can’t be certain he won’t end by falling out of a window, like other oligarchs. In his own interest, siding with Putin is too high a risk.
I’m afraid dealing with Ivanishvili’s Georgia is no different from dealing with putlerstan, for the reasons already stated.

Aside from Ukrainians, people around the world should finally start to understand one thing. If a totalitarian and sadistic state is ready to send its entire population to the meat grinder or to torture, murder its fellow citizens for political reasons, what do you think it would be ready to do to you?
This should inspire us to think and act accordingly. The Ukrainians are showing us the way. We must give them all the weapons they need and prepare to defend ourselves!
