Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy made a statement regarding the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in his state . In his message on X, he called the meeting “historic” and stressed that Alaska is ready to host it.

“I welcome the upcoming meeting between President Donald J. Trump and Russian President Putin, which will take place here in the great state of Alaska. Alaska is the most strategically important place in the world, located at the crossroads of North America and Asia, with the Arctic to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Only two miles separate Russia from Alaska, and no other place is more important to our national defense, energy security, and leadership in the Arctic,” he wrote.

Dunleavy added that Alaska has been a “bridge between nations” for centuries and remains a “gateway for diplomacy, trade and security” in one of the most important regions on the planet.

“It is appropriate that discussions of global significance are taking place here… The whole world will be watching, and Alaska stands ready to host this historic meeting,” he said.

Trump and Putin meeting

Trump had previously said he would meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin next Friday, August 15, 2025, in Alaska . This was later confirmed by Putin aide Yuri Ushakov.

However, a senior White House official told CBS News that plans for next Friday’s summit remain uncertain and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could still attend. 

At the same time, Trump stated that a peace agreement on Ukraine  should expect an exchange of territories .

“What we really want is to take back some of the territory and swap it around. It’s complicated… But we’re going to switch gears, get some changes. There will be a mutually beneficial swap of territory,” Trump said.
