After stopping US aid, Russians believe more in victory over Ukraine – survey

There are no Russians left who believe in the victory of Ukraine, although there were such people before.

Against the backdrop of news about the reduction of Western support for Ukraine, more Russians began to believe in the possibility of victory, and there were fewer supporters of peace negotiations. This is evidenced by the results of a sociological study conducted by the Russian Levada Center , which has a reputation of being “independent” of the Kremlin.

Thus, in January 2024, 77% of Russians surveyed expressed their support for the invasion of Ukraine, while 16% disapproved of it. Another 8% could not decide. This is the second highest figure since the beginning of the war (78% support was in March 2022), compared to August 2023, when the Ukrainian Armed Forces were still conducting a counter-offensive, the number of supporters of the war in the Russian Federation increased by 7%.

But the number of supporters of a transition to peace negotiations has recently decreased. If in November 57% of Russians were in favor of negotiations, then in January the figure was 52%. It is noteworthy that even in this situation, there were fewer supporters of further continuation of the war – 40% in January.VIDEO OF THE DAYPlay Video

Overall, 77% of Russians surveyed are confident that the war against Ukraine will end in a Russian victory. This is 6% more than a year ago and overall is the highest figure during the war. At the same time, in January 2024, a survey did not reveal a significant number of Russians who believed in the possibility of a victory for Ukraine. In previous surveys, 1-2% of respondents had this expectation.

  1. Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked a bill to pair tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine and Israel with stringent border security measures, thwarting a compromise they had demanded in the latest setback to the emergency national security spending package.

But Democrats quickly moved to salvage the aid, with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, pivoting to advance a stand-alone foreign aid bill stripped of the immigration deal. A vote on that alternative was expected later on Wednesday.

“Republicans have said they can’t pass Ukraine without border. Now they say they can’t pass Ukraine with border. Today, I’m giving them a choice,” Mr. Schumer said on the Senate floor before the votes. “I urge Republicans to take yes for an answer.” Earlier in the day, he expressed confidence that the national security package, detached from the border provisions, would have enough support to advance.
