After Fedorov’s revealing press conference, Serhii Sternenko also went live and laid out his complaints about Syrskyi. This will help explain why people are out in the streets protesting:

– No real long-term strategy: Syrskyi is stuck managing tactical problems, internal politics, and his own position instead of building a clear plan for defeating Russia.

– The corps reform exists on paper: Corps commanders lack real authority, have little control over personnel, and often do not even command the brigades officially assigned to them.

– Brigades are constantly torn apart: Key battalions are taken away, random units are attached in their place, and formations end up fighting with people they barely know.

– Resources depend on loyalty: Syrskyi’s favorites receive more drones, equipment, ammunition, and personnel. Commanders he dislikes can get ten or twenty times less support.

– Unwanted commanders are set up to fail: Their reinforcements disappear, their supplies are reduced, and their flanks are weakened. When the brigade starts losing ground, the commander gets blamed and replaced by someone more loyal.

– Failed commanders keep landing new jobs: Serious mistakes, pointless losses, and command failures do not lead to punishment. Some officers are transferred or even promoted.

– Commanders are replaced too often: A brigade commander barely has time to understand the unit before being moved or removed. That kills stability, experience, and long-term improvement.

– Strong but independent commanders get pushed out: Good results are not enough if the commander is not personally loyal to Syrskyi. Successful officers can be marginalized, removed, or sent to another sector.

– Defense Ministry reforms were deliberately blocked: Generals ignored calls, refused to provide information, buried projects in paperwork, and prevented major technological and organizational changes.

– Nobody tracked losses: The military lacked a serious system for comparing losses across units, commanders, and operations. The General Staff also refused to share important loss data with the Ministry of Defense.

– Lying became part of the system: Battlefield problems were hidden until they became impossible to ignore. Reports kept saying everything was under control, even as the real situation was falling apart.

– Syrskyi built a “personal guard”: Heavily favored assault formations, especially the 425th Skelia Regiment, received huge numbers of troops and resources while remaining under commanders personally loyal to him.

– Loyalty created impunity: Commanders close to Syrskyi became linked to abductions, murder orders, torture, and beatings.

– Soldiers were sent into “meat assaults”: Attacks were launched without proper reconnaissance, coordination, or realistic goals. In one case, Ukrainian troops drove into Ukrainian minefields, came under Russian fire, and then exchanged friendly fire with another Ukrainian brigade.

– Wounded soldiers were abandoned: Skelia commanders refused to evacuate one of their wounded troops and called him disposable. Another brigade had to rescue him under drone fire.

– Recruits were abused during training: In Skelia, soldiers were beaten with weapons, tortured, injured, and killed. The commanders responsible operated with a sense of total impunity.

– Barrier troops were used: Formations under Syrskyi’s command adopted methods associated with coercing soldiers to keep moving forward.

– The Ukrainian army was being turned into a smaller Russian army: Less initiative, less technology, less respect for soldiers, and more fear, rigid control, punishment, and mass assaults.

– Critics were punished: Soldiers who spoke publicly faced reprimands, investigations, pressure from commanders, and orders to shut up.

– Personal loyalty mattered more than results: Obedience to Syrskyi was rewarded more than battlefield success, independent thinking, or competence.

Unfortunately, internal conflicts—even if we acknowledge the possibility that all the criticisms are true, and even more so if they are true—have only one winner: Russia.

For the sake of Ukraine (which includes European public opinion and the decisions of allied governments), I hope the situation is handled in the best possible way and with a broad perspective.

There is nothing worse than self-sabotage.

Putin will not be stopped through appeasement. He will go further unless he is stopped by strength now. Provide Ukraine with all the necessary means to stop Russia and end the war.”
