“Every now and then, someone shares a quote from Jeffrey Sachs as though it’s some authoritative source on Ukraine and what caused Putin to invade.
So let me be clear, Sachs is not a political scientist, he is not an expert in international relations, he is not a historian – he was an economist who made his money working in Russia.
How does he earn his money now?
He doesn’t get paid by any university or any respected NGO.
He is paid by Russian state media and Kremlin sponsored “think tanks” specifically to generate content for them. He is also paid significant appearance fees to attend conferences and events to promote Russian foreign policy talking points.
Sachs is a crucial arm of Putin’s information warfare machine as he provides an illusion of Western academic legitimacy to an ideology of Russian imperialist expansion seeded in fundamentalist Christian dogma.
Unfortunately, it has been wildly successful. With many well meaning social media users in the West mistaking him for an impartial academic – he is not. He is a paid Kremlin propagandist.
Let’s have a look at who his fellow guests at this conference are:
Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov.
Sanctioned Russian oligarch and fascist imperialist, Konstantin Malofeev, who promotes the idea that Russia has been chosen by God to rule over the entire Eurasian continent (yes, really).
Russian state media “political scientist” Dmitry Symes, who advocates for the annexation of Ukraine and warns against the “degenerate” West.
Deputy Chair of Russian State Duma and hardline nationalist, Peter Tolstoy, who openly advocates for civilisational war with the “satanic” West.
French “Eurasianist” ideologue Pierre-Antoine Plaquevent, who believes Western liberalism must collapse and be replaced by a Russia-led “civilisational order.”
Host of Kremlin propaganda TV, Ekaterina Andreev, who promotes the idea that Russia is liberating Ukrainians from “Nazis”, and that NATO are “satanists”.
Infamous Kremlin paid influencer Max Blumenthal, who called NATO “a global neo-Nazi alliance”.
Russian politician, Sergey Mironov, who is promoted as the leader of the opposition within Russia, but also argues “Ukraine must cease to exist as a state.” and “Western liberalism is a threat to humanity.”
…oh, and Alex Jones and Elon Musk’s notoriously racist father, both of whom promote far right conspiracy theories.
I’m not telling you to stop listening to Sachs, but place everything he says within the same context you would if any of these other paid Kremlin mouthpieces said it. He is not an expert, but he is a consistent liar.”

Through his Western academic credentials, Sachs lends false legitimacy to these extremist ideologies.
Ryan’s message is clear: you can listen to Sachs if you wish, but don’t treat him as an independent expert, rather as a Kremlin-funded mouthpiece.

In much “main stream” Media as well as social media and browsers, fact checking has gone out the window. Even AI both by programing and learning our flaws is now capable of lying and obscuring truth.
