On Thursday evening, a bipartisan group of 14 senators called on President Donald Trump to rescind an invitation extended to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami this December, The Washington Post reports .

“President Putin bears full responsibility for Russia’s unleashing of a full-scale, aggressive war against Ukraine. Allowing him to attend the G20 summit in the United States raises serious concerns about the legitimization and normalization of a government that continues to strike civilian targets in Ukraine on a daily basis,” the senators wrote in a letter published exclusively by the newspaper.

Senators note that Putin, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and other members of the Russian delegation are under US sanctions for participating in actions considered a threat to national security.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation on Wednesday and called it “an opportunity for him to engage not only with the president but with other world leaders.”

The publication noted that Siluanov’s participation in the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, last month surprised other participants and provoked outrage from European Union members, who demanded that he not be included in the ministers’ group photo.

The article notes that Senators Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire) sponsored the letter, which was signed by six other Democrats and six Republicans.

Wicker is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Shaheen is the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
