After an explosion at one of the local thermal power plants, the power went out on the island.

On the island of Sakhalin in Russia’s Far East, at approximately 7:40 a.m. local time on Tuesday morning, October 28, a power outage occurred throughout the southern part of Sakhalin following an explosion at one of the local combined heat and power plants. Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko announced the power outage on his Telegram channel .

According to Russian media, dozens of communities were left without power, including the regional capital, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Water supplies were also cut off in several districts. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Dalniy, Novo-Aleksandrovsk, and Novotroitskoye were reportedly without power and water.

Local residents complain that their apartments are also cold because the pumps and heating systems are not working. The situation is compounded by weather conditions—a cold snap has been recorded on the island. Initially, the cause of the breakdown was not specified because the equipment was being inspected.

Limarenko subsequently reported that the power generation facilities were operating properly. He added that he was personally monitoring the situation.
