800 companies are fighting for the right to supply Ukraine with military equipment on a lend-lease basis

The US Department of Defense is reviewing 1,300 proposals from 800 companies to develop and manufacture weapons for use by Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion.

The proposals were provided at the request of the ministry as part of a broad initiative to “implement Ukraine’s requests for priority security assistance,” CNN reports citing a Pentagon official.

They are centered around key areas, including weapons capabilities for air defense, anti-tank, anti-personnel, coastal defense, anti-tank warfare, unmanned aerial systems, artillery and secure communications, which have been identified by Ukraine as a key military need.

The Pentagon should decide in the coming weeks which proposals will get the green light to deploy weapons production for Ukraine and the US military.

The ministry believes that the result should be an acceleration and build-up of weapons production capacity, as the US and its allies will likely be forced to support Ukraine long after its own weapons stockpiles are exhausted.

“The Department of Defense is exploring options that would accelerate production and expand the capacity of the industrial base to produce weapons and military equipment that can be quickly exported, deployed with minimal training, and proven to be effective on the battlefield,” the US Department of Defense said.

First of all, the Pentagon is looking for options that can be delivered within a month to six months. It also asks the companies to detail what types of air, land or sea platforms their weapons could be deployed on, and whether they are already producing any of these.

  1. Ukraine can go on a shopping spree!

It would be very wise to send ready-made weapons and ammo ASAP, especially those that Ukraine forces have already been trained on and which are the most essential. The US Army, Navy and Air Force have huge stockpiles of such material.
