▪️ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sharply criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for weaponizing Ukraine’s EU membership bid in domestic politics — warning that such tactics pose a threat to European security and values.

▪️ “He is doing very dangerous things,” Zelensky said during a press briefing, accusing Orbán of dragging Ukraine into Hungary’s election debate and attempting to block Kyiv’s accession to the European Union purely for domestic leverage.

▪️ According to Zelensky, independent polling shows that 70% of Hungarian citizens support Ukraine’s EU accession, contradicting Orbán’s government-backed polling which allegedly presented manipulated results to imply the opposite.

🔹 “People in Hungary are for us. He just can’t keep winning on hatred forever.”

▪️ Zelensky warned EU partners that Orbán is using procedural influence to block integration steps, even as Ukraine works to meet all technical conditions. “He has no right to block another country’s democratic choice,” Zelensky said.

🔍 Context & escalation:

▪️ Ukraine is preparing the technical readiness of three EU accession clusters by July 1, and Vice Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna has reported ongoing dialogue with Hungary — with no breakthrough yet.

▪️ Zelensky stated clearly: “Everyone supports us — except one particular country.”

▪️ On NATO, Zelensky also pushed back on Orbán’s linkage of Ukraine’s membership prospects to a so-called peace deal with Russia: “It’s not about that. He just works the way he works.”

⚠️ Strategic implications:

▪️ Hungary is increasingly seen as an internal spoiler in European consensus mechanisms, using its veto power to slow-roll or block initiatives tied to Ukraine, sanctions, and enlargement.

▪️ Orbán’s obstructive stance has raised concerns in Brussels that Hungary may become a Trojan horse within the European Union and NATO, echoing Russian geopolitical narratives while eroding collective credibility.

▪️ Zelensky’s message to the EU: The Hungarian people are not the problem — Orbán is.

The EU needs to apply Article 7 to Orbans Hungary 🇭🇺 until they have either voted him out or until Hungary is kicked out of the EU.

Tim De Zitter The EU somehow managed to make itself a democratic union in which majority rule doesn’t apply. Amazing. It’s equally amazing that they can’t yet fix this simple problem, much less field a fighting force and military industrial base capable of providing and supplying a credible defence. They deserve whatever Russia throws at them.
