UKRAINIAN SNIPER

Sniper remembers hunting Russian tanks at night, PTSD, and handling trauma

Ukraine: The Latest

A special interview with Roman Trokhymets: a sniper in the Ukrainian Armed Forces who fought in some of the defining battles of this war. He served in the Donbas after the annexation of Crimea, and later during the battle for Kyiv at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, where he hunted Russian tanks at night. He was wounded near Bakhmut: the site of some of the worst fighting of the conflict. And in 2023, he survived the Russian missile strike on a restaurant in Kramatorsk that killed 13 civilians seated around him. In this conversation, Roman reflects on those moments – and on what comes after them: trauma, PTSD, survivor’s guilt, and the constant awareness that death is always close. He also speaks about writing as a way to process war and begin to heal. This is our conversation.

  1. When I see awesome men like Roman I am always forced to conclude that Ukraine needs many millions more like him.

  2. To see more of the work of the outstanding Latika Bourke and her blazing eyes, visit the DT’s YouTube channel.

An aside : the Daily Mail was all teed up to buy the DT, for £500 million. But the UK govt forced them to drop their plan by launching a four-month investigation by regulators over fears it would hand the owner; Lord Rothernere, too much sway over the press.
Now the DT has been bought by Axel Springer for £575m.
The DM is pro-Ukraine, but also employs the utterly vile Kremlin shill Peter Hitchens as a columnist, so I did not want that to go ahead.
Axel Springer as I understand it, is centre right and supportive of Ukraine.
AS owns Politico. It also owns the crappy Bild though unfortunately.

“Mathias Döpfner, Axel Springer’s chief executive, says he sees ‘massive growth potential’ for The Telegraph, promising an investment programme that would include US expansion and a technological transformation underpinned by AI.”
