Ukrainian drone units have repeatedly struck Russian military rail logistics, targeting fuel trains and locomotives across occupied territories in recent months.

According to Defense Express on April 3, Ukrainian forces are not only countering Russian long-range drone attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure but are also systematically disrupting the logistical backbone of Russian troops by hitting railway assets used to transport fuel and supplies.

Recent incidents highlighted by Defense Express include a March 23 strike on a fuel train near Stanytsia Luhanska.

The operation was carried out by Ukraine’s 1st Separate Center of Unmanned Systems in coordination with the Security Service of Ukraine.

Earlier, on March 12, another fuel train in temporarily occupied Luhansk region was targeted by the “Kairos” battalion of the 414th brigade, known as “Madyar’s Birds.”

Defense Express also reports that Ukrainian drone operators from the 413th Separate Battalion conducted a broader operation on the southern front, striking ammunition depots, fuel storage facilities, and a locomotive supporting Russian military logistics.

These operations build on a pattern observed since 2024. According to Defense Express, one of the earliest recorded cases occurred in July 2024, when a Ukrainian FPV drone struck a diesel locomotive pulling a fuel train near temporarily occupied Tokmak.

The attack was notable for being conducted near the maximum operational range of the drone. A similar strike followed in August 2024 in the same area.

The report indicates that Ukrainian forces have continued to expand both the geography and frequency of such attacks, targeting rail infrastructure across multiple sectors of the front. In response, Russian forces have attempted to adapt, including efforts to upgrade armored trains with enhanced detection systems aimed at identifying incoming drones more quickly.

The repeated targeting of locomotives and fuel convoys suggests a broader operational focus on degrading Russia’s ability to sustain frontline operations. Rail transport remains a critical component of Russian military logistics, particularly for moving fuel and heavy equipment over long distances.

According to Defense Express, the growing number of successful drone strikes against railway assets demonstrates both the increasing precision of Ukrainian unmanned systems and their evolving role in targeting high-value logistical nodes beyond the immediate battlefield.

Earlier, Ukrainian Defense Forces reported regaining control of nine settlements and up to 480 square kilometers along the Oleksandrivka axis, as assault and airborne units advanced in the south while continuing to repel Russian counterattacks and drone activity.

  1. Such strikes are low-level in the news world but very important for the Ukrainian soldiers in the field.
