French Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets play a key role in intercepting Russian cruise missiles and Shahed attack drones, Ukrainian defense officials said, highlighting the aircraft’s potential contribution to strengthening the country’s air defenses, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said on March 4.
The French-built fighters are particularly effective at engaging aerial threats used in Russia’s large-scale missile and drone strikes.
“This will significantly strengthen our country’s capabilities in the air, as these aircraft effectively destroy cruise missiles and strike drones, including Shaheds,” the ministry said.
The Mirage 2000 is a multirole fighter equipped with digital avionics, modern radar systems, and electronic warfare equipment designed to enhance survivability and target detection in contested airspace.
According to Ukrainian officials, the Dassault Mirage aircraft expected for Ukraine approach the capabilities of so-called “4++ generation” fighters, offering performance superior to the MiG-29 aircraft currently in service with the Ukrainian Air Force.
“They are deeply modernized fourth-generation fighters whose combat capabilities, radar equipment, and maneuverability approach those of fifth-generation aircraft,” the ministry said. “They feature improved avionics, are lighter and more maneuverable than most counterparts, and can perform combat missions at altitudes of up to 18 kilometers.”
The aircraft’s radar and weapons systems allow it to detect and engage difficult targets such as low-flying cruise missiles and Iranian-designed Shahed strike drones, as well as Russian variants known as Geran and Gerbera.
Equipped with Magic-2 air-to-air missiles, the Mirage 2000 can engage aerial targets with high precision, including drones used for reconnaissance at operational and tactical levels.
Ukrainian officials say aircraft like the Mirage are particularly valuable in countering what Kyiv describes as Russia’s ongoing campaign of missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The Mirage 2000’s weapons pylons are also compatible with NATO-standard air-launched weapons, allowing the aircraft to carry a wide range of munitions, including Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles, AASM Hammer guided bombs, and other precision weapons.
“Having such aircraft in service significantly strengthens Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, which is critically important during the aggressor’s massive missile and drone attacks,” the ministry added.
Earlier, reports emerged that following the Ukrainian pattern, France was preparing to modify its fleet of Mirage 2000D fighter jets to intercept long-range suicide drones such as Iran’s Shahed-136.
