The E-3 Sentry AWACS is the most important aircraft over Iran right now, and it’s not firing a single missile. In this video, I break down what the E-3 is actually doing in the middle of U.S., Israeli, and Iranian air operations, and why the real battle isn’t the strike package. It’s the air picture.
As a former Air Force radar tech on the E-3, I explain how AWACS builds a common air picture across fighters, tankers, Patriot batteries, naval ships, and partner nations. In a sky filled with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, interceptors, and civilian traffic, confusion kills faster than enemy fire. The E-3 exists to prevent fratricide, manage identification, and compress the time between detection and decision.
I also walk through where the orbit likely sits, how planners balance radar line-of-sight against threat rings, and why a slow, non-stealthy Boeing 707 survives only because it’s layered with fighters, tankers, and constant geometry adjustments. Lose the orbit and you fragment the fight.
