US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has signed a memorandum that will cut the Pentagon’s civilian workforce. According to Bloomberg , about 76,000 employees will be laid off.
“The end result (of the memorandum – UNIAN) will be a reduction in the number of full-time civilian positions,” the US Department of Defense said in a statement.
It is noted that the Pentagon talked about plans to reduce the number of its civilian personnel by 5-8% back in February of this year. Hegset confirmed his intention to support US President Donald Trump’s initiative to reduce the federal workforce.

The agency recalled that the Pentagon currently employs about 950,000 civilian employees. About 76,000 people will lose their jobs due to the memorandum.
Journalists emphasized that the memorandum specified the exact percentage of cuts. The Pentagon chief also called for the implementation of deferred retirement programs and suggested that eligible civilian employees voluntarily retire early.
In addition, Hegseth demanded that the department’s leaders present him with proposed organizational charts for future changes by April 11.
