  1. I’ve got the Panorama report cued up on bbc iplayer.
I profoundly disagree with the prof about “loving russia.” It’s absolutely impossible to do so when its people not only endorse, but actually love genocide of Ukrainians.
I had studied russian but after 2014 started unlearning it like the prof. I even remember learning how to play “Podmoskorny Vechera” at one time. I also remember watching a Shostakovich concert with my dad and both of us agreeing that the guy was a genius. I can’t listen to him now, even though I know that he was profoundly opposed to communism and the kremlin regime.
I was in Moscow and SP a couple of times during early putler and naively didn’t pick up on any sinister vibes. I knew next to nothing about the apartment bombings or the genocide in Chechnya. The only thing that struck me as slightly discomforting was the existence of a putler watch; given to those who had done something useful to the kremlin. People spoke in awe of it and of how much they yearned for one. I should have noticed then the signs of the cult of personality being built up. On reflection, it is clear that they really wanted a dominant ruler who would tell them what to think.
It’s very hard to imagine putinaZiism dying without a total collapse of the putinaZi state.
