Despite the enemy’s numerical superiority, Ukraine once again proved its ability to retake territory without incurring heavy losses for itself.

During the Defense Forces’ counteroffensive in Kupyansk in recent weeks, Russian losses in the battles for the city exceeded Ukrainian losses in this area by 27 times, The Times reports, citing British intelligence data.
According to the publication, last week, British officials were briefed on the “kill ratio” on the Russian-Ukrainian front in the context of Ukraine’s ability to reclaim its territory in battles against a numerically superior enemy.
An unnamed source in the British Ministry of Defense told journalists that as of the end of December, before Christmas, up to 200 Russian soldiers were surrounded in the territory of Kupyansk. It is not specified how many Russians died during the Ukrainian counteroffensive. But overall, Russian losses in the area over the past year are estimated at thousands.
The Times also writes, citing diplomatic sources, that they see no signs of Putin’s willingness to compromise and abandon his maximalist demands regarding Ukraine, despite Russia’s huge losses and the lack of significant progress on the front.
Russian casualties in Ukraine: latest news
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of the morning of January 16, Russia’s total losses during the full-scale war amounted to over 1.224 million people, 11.5 thousand tanks, 23.9 thousand other armored vehicles, and 36.2 thousand pieces of artillery.
In October, The Economist magazine wrote that Russia’s total losses in 2025 alone amounted to about 100,000 people . At the same time, Ukrainian losses are estimated by analysts as being 5 times lower than Russian ones.
In some parts of the front, the ratio of casualties is even more striking. In December, open data analyst Playfra reported that in one area northeast of Pokrovsk, where the Russians are attacking particularly hard, Russian casualties exceed Ukrainian casualties by 15 times
