You can negotiate with Putin only from a position of power. Because he does not understand any language in the world except the “language of power”. I told about this in an interview with POLITICO edition.
There is a global problem today – Donald Trump does not understand Putin. And this problem is not only for Ukraine. He thinks putin is trading and trying to get better conditions for peace. But it’s not the case. Putin has a completely different logic – he wants to restore the Soviet Union, restore the Russian Empire. He dreams of his place in history – no matter the cost of human lives.
And it is important to understand one more thing. Putin is not interested in the seizure of additional lands in eastern Ukraine, which his troops could not take and which he today demands to pass on by any “peaceful” agreement.
He uses this requirement as a tool of destabilization. Any territorial concession would need a referendum. And a referendum in a warring country is a division of society, internal conflict, political crisis. That’s exactly what the Kremlin is accomplishing – to destroy our unity from the inside. This is a classic intelligence scenario. Remember: Putin is an officer of the KGB. He’s an expert at this stuff.
That is why Ukraine needs real, not declarative security guarantees – in the form of integration with NATO and the presence of allied troops on our territory – “boots on the ground”, in particular American ones.
But the issue of security and the future peace deal is much broader. Europe must be at the negotiating table. It is European countries today that bear the colossal financial burden of supporting Ukraine, and their role in shaping long-term security guarantees is key.
Of course, the role of the United States remains decisive. But without Europe, no security construction will work. In this process, allies can play different but complementary roles – conditionally the “good” and “bad” policeman. And it is the emergence of strong European leadership at the negotiating table that is able to provide the necessary impetus for real advancement towards peace.

Petro Poroshenko has some advice for his bitter rival, the current president of Ukraine.

He is currently very active on social media. Contrary to some claims, he is not seeking to destabilize the govt.
Indeed, much of what he says is exactly in line. However, in the Politico article he’s much more aggressive:

“Despite the catastrophe in the Oval Office in February a year ago, he should have stuck to demanding simply a ceasefire. He doesn’t understand Putin and he doesn’t understand Trump. And we have another problem: Trump doesn’t understand Putin. And that’s a global tragedy, and not just for Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.”

Poro is right on some things, but totally wrong on others. Zelensky knows exactly what putler and TACO are like, and he understands them both. The problem with Zelensky is he can’t say out aloud what he thinks of TACO, or the tantrum that followed would be a catastrophe for Ukraine.
Poroshenko is right and wrong. He made is own grave mistakes when he was president, and I think Zelensky knows very well what a putler is and what a taco is. Nobody is giving him the tools enabling him to say, go fuck yourself, you fat, spray-painted kipunji.
