Since the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Szijjártó has made 16 official visits to Moscow.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has been regularly briefing his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on the progress of European Union meetings, The Washington Post reported , citing a European security official.
According to the publication’s interlocutor, Szijjártó repeatedly called Lavrov during breaks in EU meetings to provide him with “quick reports on what was discussed” and possible solutions.
The official told reporters that thanks to such calls, “for many years, Moscow has been virtually at the negotiating table at every EU meeting.” Szijjártó did not respond to reporters’ request for comment.
The publication recalled that since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Szijjártó has made 16 official visits to Moscow, the last of which took place on March 4, 2026, when he met with Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin.
Hungary adopted a resolution against Ukraine’s membership in the EU – what is known
Recall that earlier the Hungarian National Assembly adopted a resolution rejecting Ukraine’s membership in the European Union . Hungarian government speaker Zoltan Kovacs said that 142 deputies expressed support for the resolution.
According to the resolution, Ukraine should not be admitted to the EU because the country is in a state of war and its accession “risks making the European Union a direct party to the conflict.”
Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine responded that the Hungarian resolution refusing to support our country’s accession to the European Union does not change EU rules and will not have the legal force to influence Ukraine’s European integration process.
