Belarus releases 52 prisoners at Trump’s request – Reuters

Belarus has released 52 prisoners of various nationalities after an appeal by US President Donald Trump. The freed ones went to Lithuania with a US delegation that negotiated their release. Reuters reported this on Thursday, September 11, citing the US Embassy in Vilnius.

Trump called on the self-proclaimed president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to release the detainees, whom the American leader called “hostages”. After the Belarusian leader met with the representative of the US President John Coale, Belarus confirmed their release.

“It was the biggest batch of prisoners pardoned by the authoritarian leader, who is seeking to repair relations with the United States after years of isolation and sanctions on his former Soviet state,” the material says.

However, in a phone call, Trump called on Lukashenko to release a much larger number of prisoners, which number about 1,400 prisoners.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 11, US Presidential Spokesperson John Coale stated during a meeting with self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk that the US wants to normalize relations with Belarus and has already lifted sanctions on the Belarusian airline Belavia.

As a reminder, on August 15, the unrecognized President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated that the US President had accepted an invitation to come to Belarus with his family.

On August 15, US President Donald Trump spoke with Lukashenko by phone before meeting with russian dictator vladimir putin in Alaska.

  1. Luka will replace those 52 released in a few days, to add to the 1000s still locked away by the dictator.
