New US aid package will include GLSDB missiles that can hit targets 160km away – Politico

The United States of America is likely planning to give the Ukrainian army, which has been fighting a Russian invasion for 11 months, GLSDB missiles. This weapon has a range of approximately 160 km (100 mi).

Washington plans to announce a new defense aid package for Kyiv on Friday, January 20. This was reported by Politico, citing three sources among US officials.

As noted, on this day, the eighth meeting of defense ministers of more than 50 states to discuss assistance to Ukraine will take place. It will be held in Germany.

Politico also notes that the next tranche of defense support from Washington will include additional artillery, ammunition and armored vehicles (probably Stryker armored fighting vehicles ). At the same time, the US is not expected to transfer M1 Abrams tanks.

“According to one US official, this reluctance is due to problems with the logistics and maintenance of the tanks, and not fears that their transfer could escalate the conflict. This person noted that the US helped Ukraine obtain Soviet tanks and supports the British decision to send close dozens of their Challenger 2 tanks,” the statement said.

The GLSDB small-diameter ground-launched projectile is jointly produced by SAAB AB and Boeing . They are controlled by GPS. They are able to overcome some electronic obstacles, work in all weather conditions, and be used against armored vehicles.

Such ammunition can be fired from HIMARS and M270 launchers.

The Drive previously wrote that GLSDB could increase the Ukrainian military’s ability to strike at enemy targets far behind the front line. In early December, Boeing has already approached the Pentagon with the initiative to transfer GLSDB to Kyiv.

Earlier, Yuriy Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, noted that if Ukraine receives Boeing shells with a range of more than 150 km, it will be able to strike at enemy airfields and invader bases in their rear.

He said that these weapons can seriously help on the battlefield, because they are highly accurate and will deliver blows that are very painful for the Russian army.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, adviser to the head of the President’s Office Mikhail Podolyak called on the United States of America to provide Ukraine with ATACMS ballistic missiles with a range of up to 300 km . He noted that the time has come for the transfer of such weapons.

  1. “He said that these weapons can seriously help on the battlefield, because they are highly accurate and will deliver blows that are very painful for the Russian army.”

These newest additions to Ukraine’s arsenal could open a new chapter of putting the mafia army in a dire predicament. They already have been forced to adjust to HIMARS attacks, by scattering their ammo dumps and or moving them further back from the front, ditto their command posts and other vital infrastructure. These measures reduce their fighting ability, if I may say it this way.
Seriously, I don’t know why such weapons haven’t been handed over to Ukraine much sooner. It’s extremely frustrating.

    • I agree it’s extremely frustrating.

Assuming ATCAMS are limited in numbers (mostly out of production with only older models being refurbished to extend shelf life) and desired in the (recently announced) plan to deploy missile-armed Marines in the Pacific, and also assuming PrSMs which are the ATCAM replacements won’t be available until ’25 at the earliest; there still should be some, some ATCAMS available for strategic targets.

And even assuming there is a big concern of escalation if Ukraine were to retaliate in-kind with to Russian attacks on residential high-rises, surely they could provide some kind of targeting oversight guarantee so that doesn’t happen.

I trust the Ukrainians to hit military targets. Spring is too long to wait for more range.

      • I am very positive that Ukraine would target only military objects. They know that this is the way to win a war, and not by destroying civilians. Besides that, for many in the West, it would be worse for Ukraine to target civilians than the cockroaches. We call this a double standard.

  2. “War is peace” Putin cynically states that brutal war unleashed against Ukraine is “an attempt to end the war”

  3. 150km range puts the city of Luhansk under Ukrainian fire control. This is the orcs main transport and logistics hub for the whole of Eastern Ukraine.

    • Liked, minus Ukrainian Crimea, it looks to cover the rest of the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
