The corresponding resolution was supported by almost 500 MEPs.
The vote took place today in Strasbourg during the plenary session of the European Parliament, which is broadcast live by the Espreso.TV channel. 494 members of the European Parliament spoke in favor of the resolution, 58 parliamentarians voted against it, and another 44 abstained.
The resolution states that the invaders in Ukraine are carrying out “indiscriminate attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure”, as a result of which thousands of people have died. In addition, the adversary commits atrocities – torture, sexual violence, executions without investigation and trial, abductions, “European Truth” reports .
The draft document stated that the Russian Federation violated the principles of the UN Charter, as a result of which Mariupol was almost completely destroyed, and a humanitarian crisis arose.
“The European Parliament emphasizes that the targeted attacks and atrocities committed by the Russian Federation against the civilian population of Ukraine, the destruction of civilian infrastructure and other serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law constitute acts of terror against the Ukrainian population and are war crimes… in the light of the above, recognizes Russia as a state – a sponsor of terrorism and a state that uses the means of terrorism,” the text of the resolution reads.
In connection with this decision, the EP called on the European Union to develop a legal framework for identifying countries that sponsor terrorism and states that use the means of terrorism, which will lead to the introduction of a number of restrictive measures against it.
The European Parliament calls on the Council of the European Union and European partners to recognize the Russian Federation as a sponsor of terrorism.
“The European Parliament calls for the further reduction of diplomatic relations with Russia and the reduction of contacts with its official representatives at all levels to the absolute necessary minimum; calls on EU member states to close and ban Russian state institutions, such as Russian centers of science and culture, as well as organizations and associations of the Russian diaspora, which operate under the auspices and leadership of Russian diplomatic missions and promote Russian state propaganda around the world,” the document states.
At the same time, the EP called on the European Union to speed up work on the ninth package of anti-Russian sanctions.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Twitter welcomed the European Parliament’s decision to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
“I welcome the European Parliament’s decision to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and a state that uses the means of terrorism,” the Ukrainian leader said.
The President emphasized that Russia needs to be isolated at all levels and brought to justice in order to put an end to its long-term policy of terrorism in Ukraine and the world.
