As of today, according to analysts, support for Russia’s senseless invasion of Ukraine is declining among Russian residents of the border regions and the rest of the country.
The Kremlin appears to be setting the stage for a false flag attack in Russia’s Belgorod region , likely in an attempt to win back public support for the war in Ukraine.
As the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) report says , recently Kremlin propagandists have begun hypothesizing that Ukrainian forces are seeking to invade the Belgorod region, and other Russian sources note that Russian forces need to regain control over Kupyansk, Kharkiv region, in order to minimize the threat of a Ukrainian attack.
“These statements have long been circulating in the military correspondent community, who criticized the Russian military command for abandoning positions in Volchansk in the northeast of the Kharkiv region after the withdrawal of Russian troops from the region in September. They have now stepped up their calls for the Russian Federation to return territories in the Kharkiv region, saying, that such preventive measures will stop Ukrainians from carrying out assault operations in the Kupyansky and Volchansky directions,” analysts say.
In turn, the governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, also published footage of the construction of fortifications on the border of Ukraine and the Belgorod region.
“Russian statements about an imminent Ukrainian attack on the Belgorod region are absurd and are only aimed at intimidating the population into supporting the war. Ukraine has no strategic interest in invading Russia and is unable to do so on such a scale. Ukrainian troops continue to liberate the occupied population points in the west of the Luhansk region after the victory in the north of the Kharkiv region,” the ISW notes.
As of today, according to analysts, support for Russia’s senseless invasion of Ukraine is declining among Russian residents of the border regions and the rest of the country due to mobilization and military failures.
Russian opposition publications write that since the end of October, relatives of mobilized men have begun protests in 15 Russian regions, with the most notable protests taking place in the regions bordering Ukraine.
“These preposterous speculations about a fantastic Ukrainian invasion of Russia may also be part of the Kremlin’s efforts to recognize and appease Russia’s nationalist war supporter community. Russian military correspondents have repeatedly accused the Kremlin and the Russian Defense Ministry of failing to defend Russia, including the newly annexed territories. The Kremlin, however, is unlikely will be able to recapture the Kharkiv region, as demanded by these nationalist figures,” the ISW says.
