$400 Million in Additional Assistance for Ukraine

NOV. 23, 2022

Today, the Department of Defense (DoD) announces the authorization of a Presidential Drawdown of security assistance valued at up to $400 million to meet Ukraine’s critical security and defense needs. This authorization is the Biden Administration’s twenty-sixth drawdown of equipment from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021.

Capabilities in this package include:

•    Additional munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS);

•    150 heavy machine guns with thermal imagery sights to counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS);

•    Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);

•    200 precision-guided 155mm artillery rounds;

•    10,000 120mm mortar rounds;

•    High-speed Anti-radiation missiles (HARMs);

•    150 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs);

•    Over 100 light tactical vehicles;

•    Over 20,000,000 rounds of small arms ammunition;

•    Over 200 generators;

•    Spare parts for 105mm Howitzers and other equipment.

With Russia’s unrelenting and brutal missile and UAS attacks on Ukrainian critical energy infrastructure, additional air defense capabilities remain an urgent priority. The additional munitions for NASAMS and heavy machine guns will help Ukraine counter these urgent threats.

In total, the United States has committed more than $19.7 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the Biden Administration. Since 2014, the United States has committed more than $21.8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine and more than $19 billion since the beginning of Russia’s unprovoked and brutal invasion on February 24.

To meet Ukraine’s evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with key capabilities.

As if today’s blitz was not enough already, here is another reason why much more assistance is needed;

  1. Ammo for the HIMARS, but no new HIMARS?
    A reminder of what Ukraine has asked for :
    150-200 tanks, 300 armoured vehicles, 100 artillery systems, 50-70 MLRS’s; including HIMARS, 10-15 anti-aircraft systems, ATACM’s.

        • Apparently no one except Trump (possibly with Gabbard as his running mate) has thrown their hat into the ring.
          Speculation is that Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, Ron DiSantis, Mike Pompeo and Josh Hawley might also run.
          I can’t see anyone on that list who comes anywhere near Reagan in terms of stature and integrity.
          The closest to Reagan is Roger Wicker and sadly he’s unlikely to run. Another excellent guy; Marco Rubio, is not believed to be running.

            • Unfortunately I could not see any info there that suggested he is running. Nothing on his website either.
              I wish he would run though, because he is the only big name who actually set out his strategy for putler; “The Rubio Doctrine”, back in 2014.
              When the electorate are offered a choice between a clear opponent of the rat and an appeaser, they go for the latter: Obama over McCain in 2008, Obama over Romney in 2012, Trump over Clinton in 2016.
              In 2020, they went for the appeaser again, although this time it was a choice between a known appeaser who had adjusted his position to being mildly opposed to the nazi rat and an out-and-out collaborator.
              McConnell and Graham would be excellent, but would not command enough support. Rubio is the right age, but doesn’t look strong enough at the moment.
              Halley is pretty sound on putler, but not 100% reliable.
              Front runner DiSantis clearly has zero integrity because he avoids the topic of putler; contenting himself simply with blaming Biden.
              A politician who refuses to be drawn on the biggest geo-political issue in the world cannot be trusted.

              • https://ballotpedia.org/Presidential_candidates,_2024#Republican_politicians
                I usually don’t pay much attention to any possible presidential candidates two years before the elections. But, above is a list of possible Republican candidates for 2024. There is also a list for Democrats and a list of Republican business executives and public figures and Democratic business executives and public figures. Things can and will change along the way. I am confident that the war will be won by before the next elections, and so the next president will be irrelevant. I still hope, however, that we will not elect another pussy into the Oval Office as Joe.

                • I think only Trump has declared though.
                  Kinzinger looks a sound choice. He tweeted a few days ago:

                  “Ukrainians have shown a willingness & fearless ability to push back against an overwhelming invading force. Russians have shown a willingness to protest the Putin regime’s reckless invasion.

                  In the words of the fallen Snake Island

                  heroes:

                  Russian warships, go f— yourself.”
