“Once in power, Trump did pretty much everything the Kremlin would have wanted him to do: sow division in NATO, weaken the European Union, kowtow to Putin. The evidence is stark. In 2018 Trump and Putin met in Helsinki and had a two-hour conversation behind closed doors. By this time the whole world knew that the Russian secret state had hacked Team Hillary’s emails, that Paul Manafort had been in hock to a Kremlin proxy, that the Russian-born Sater had worked in Trump Tower, that Russia had interfered with the presidential election in 2016. The latter point was the stated finding of the US’s intelligence community.
At the joint news conference after their private chat, Putin denied that he had any kompromat on Trump. Of course he did. Putin argued ‘that he did not even know Trump was in Russia for the Miss Universe pageant in 2013’ – the time when, according to the Steele report, video of Trump was secretly recorded to blackmail him.
A reporter asked Trump point blank to denounce Russian interference in American democracy. Trump replied evasively, concluding: ‘My people came to me … they said they think it’s Russia. I have asked President Putin. He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be … I have great confidence in my intelligence people but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.’
Democratic Party Senator Chuck Schumer socked Trump: ‘Millions of Americans will continue to wonder if the only possible explanation for this dangerous and inexplicable behaviour is the possibility – the very real possibility – that President Putin holds damaging information over President Trump.’
People in the US intelligence community suggested that Trump was a ‘Russian asset’, a ‘useful idiot’ and ‘Putin’s puppet’. James Clapper, an ex-director of National Intelligence, asked ‘if Russians have something on Trump’, and former CIA director John Brennan accused Trump of ‘treason’, tweeting: ‘He is wholly in the pocket of Putin.’ Senator John McCain said it was a ‘disgraceful performance … No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant.’
One year later President Trump met President Zelenskiy at the UN headquarters in New York City and told him: ‘I really hope that you and President Putin can get together and solve your problem.’
Ukraine’s problem was that Russia had invaded in 2014 and seized Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk. Zelenskiy looked grim. On the evidence of his conduct at the Helsinki summit and his advice to Zelenskiy at the UN in New York, Donald Trump was Moscow’s man.”
