This conclusion was reached by the Western intelligence services on the basis of an intercepted conversation of the Russian military.
In the weeks leading up to the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, scenarios for a possible nuclear attack on Germany were discussed in the Russian army.
Welt writes about this , citing sources.
Such conclusions were reached by the Western intelligence services, which intercepted the conversation of the Russians during the planned maneuvers of the Russian fleet in the Baltic Sea at the end of last year.
It is noted that the military radio message spoke of nuclear strikes on three targets: Berlin, the US air base in Ramstein and Buchel air base, where the United States stores nuclear bombs. Security experts rated this information differently.
Some of them believe that the use of nuclear weapons is usually discussed and practiced in military exercises – this happened during NATO maneuvers as well. Such conversations do not always pose a real danger. However, according to others, the Russians may have known that they were being tapped, so they deliberately talked about a nuclear strike in order to intimidate opponents and stir up fear in the West.
Russia and the threat of a nuclear strike
The threats of the aggressor state intensified after the announcement of “partial” mobilization in Russia on 21 September. Then Russian President Vladimir Putin said that “the wind rose can turn” towards the West.
After the damage to the Crimean bridge, the Kremlin evaded a direct answer to the question of the use of nuclear weapons in response to such events.
Later, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the nuclear doctrine would also apply to the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, which the Russian Federation tried to annex following the results of fake “referenda”.
Experts note that Russia’s nuclear threats do not yet go beyond words and there is no real preparation for an attack.
President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that the situation on the battlefield will not affect Russia’s decision to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine . At the same time, American leader Joe Biden wondered why the Kremlin dictator kept talking about nuclear weapons if he wasn’t going to use them.
