The International Committee  of the Red Cross  (ICRC) will continue to demand access to Ukrainian prisoners of war, including the colony in occupied Yelenovka.

According to the press service of the Office of the President, this was stated by the new President of the ICRC Mirjana Egger during a conversation with the head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak.

Yermak urged Egger to do everything possible to send a Red Cross mission to the colony in Olenivka in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region, where more than 50 defenders of Ukraine were killed as a result of terrorist shelling by the Russian occupiers at the end of July.

According to him, our state, for its part, is ready to assist such a mission in every possible way.

The head of the OP is convinced that on October 17, representatives of the ICRC should arrive at the demarcation line in eastern Ukraine.

In his opinion, this would be a very important step.

In turn, Egger emphasized the importance of ICRC staff having access to prisoners of war, in particular in Yelenovka.

“This is my priority. And we will continue to demand access,” she stressed.

Recall that the Ukrainian side has repeatedly criticized the ICRC for inaction in clarifying the circumstances and other details of the terrorist attack in the correctional colony in Yelenovka, where Russian invaders are holding Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Murder of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Olenevka

On the night of July 29, an explosion occurred on the territory of the former penal colony in the occupied village of Olenovka in the Donetsk region, as a result of which the building where Ukrainian prisoners of war were taken out of the Azovstal plant was destroyed.

Immediately after the explosion, Russia accused the Armed Forces of Ukraine of shelling the penal colony. According to the Russian side, more than 50 Ukrainian defenders were killed, the number of wounded is unknown. The Ukrainian law enforcement agencies called the explosion in Olenivka a Russian terrorist act to cover up war crimes, discredit the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and disrupt the supply of weapons.

The Ukrainian side has not received official responses from Russia regarding the lists of those killed and wounded as a result of the terrorist attack.

On August 19, Mikhail Podolyak , adviser to the head of the presidential office,  accused international organizations , the International Committee of the Red Cross, of keeping silent at a time when Russia was  starving, torturing, and killing Ukrainian prisoners  .

On October 13, Ukraine put forward the demand of the ICRC, giving three days to send a mission to the colony in occupied Yelenovka.
