The Russian Federation, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, dealt a blow to the very basis of the Organization’s charter.
The United States is in favor of reforming the UN Security Council , in particular in the issue of the use of the veto by its members.
This was stated by US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, writes ” European Truth “.
She stated that the Russian Federation, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, dealt a blow to the very basis of the Organization’s charter.
“Russia violated national sovereignty and territorial integrity, violated human rights and unleashed an open war instead of negotiating peace,” she explained.
Because of Russia’s actions, the US will step up initiatives to reform the UN Security Council. We are talking about changing the rules for vetoing: now the permanent members will have to explain them to the General Assembly.
“The Security Council must also better reflect global reality and take into account geographical representation. We must not maintain an outdated status quo. Instead, we must be flexible to compromise in the name of responsibility,” Thomas-Greenfield said.
She also announced upcoming consultations with the participation of US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken “on critical issues about the reform of the Security Council and other UN bodies.”
As UNIAN reported, a UN mission “in the coming days” will visit the occupied Olenivka , where 53 Ukrainian prisoners of war died as a result of an explosion on July 29.
