US State Dept fears labeling Russia state sponsor of terrorism ‘as this could affect grain deal’ — Politico

The US State Department is concerned that Congress may recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, reported Politico with reference to its sources.

The American foreign policy agency conveyed its fears unofficially. Sources familiar with the conversations said that the State Department fears that the inclusion of Russia in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism may interfere with the so-called “grain agreement”. It was approved at the end of July, and the gradual export of Ukrainian grain from three ports of Ukraine began already in August.

The State Department noted that there are no guarantees that Russia will fulfill its obligations if the United States recognizes it as a state sponsor of terrorism.

The State Department also said that blacklisting the Russian Federation would affect the American private sector. In particular, Americans will not be able to participate in business in these countries. It is not yet known how the Congress reacted to such fears of the State Department.

Background

The US Senate (the upper house of Congress) adopted a resolution calling on the State Department to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism on July 27. The resolution has a recommendatory nature and is not binding. However, it creates additional pressure on the State Department, which has the power to declare a state a sponsor of terrorism.

Before that, the speaker of the US House of Representatives (the lower house of Congress) Nancy Pelosi called on the Secretary of State Antony Blinken to declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. Otherwise, according to her, legislators can pass a law on such recognition without the participation of the State Department.

Why is this important?

According to the State Department, this would mean that Washington may have to expand its sanctions far beyond certain sectors of the Russian economy. The current four US-designated state sponsors of terrorism—Cuba, North Korea, Iran, and Syria—trade far less with the world than Russia.

Some experts say the move will increase pressure on the Kremlin and make any relationship with Russia virtually impossible for American citizens.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that Ukraine is doing everything to ensure that the Russian Federation is added to the list of states sponsoring terrorism as soon as possible.

The Ukrainian parliament recognizes Russia as a terrorist state, and the actions of the Russian military as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

  1. “The State Department noted that there are no guarantees that Russia will fulfill its obligations if the United States recognizes it as a state sponsor of terrorism.”

There is no fucking guarantee it will fulfil any obligations anyway. This is just a poor fucking excuse from a weak kneed POTUS. Time to call a spade a spade, label the orcs for what they are, apply secondary sanctions and destroy the russian economy. If the appeasers don’t like it, tough!

    • Another sickening aspect of this is the State Department trying to separate “normal” Russians from their leadership. There is little if any daylight between them, I think that’s just a cop out. Until “normal Russians” feel the pain their leadership is causing, nothing will change in the self-induced blighted land known as Russia.

  2. It is even more important that the US declares the activities of the kremlin murder gang as genocide. No need for “proof”; by their own words and deeds, the putinazis are expediting genocide. A genocide that was explicitly set out by RIA Novosti and confirmed by tiny little nazi freak Medvedev.

  3. This is the quote that really riles me….
“The State Department also said that blacklisting the Russian Federation would affect the American private sector. In particular, Americans will not be able to participate in business in these countries. It is not yet known how the Congress reacted to such fears of the State Department.”
I’ve not heard more stupid, more idiotic, more amoral remarks than this. If the US state department actually said this, they should all resign. They say genocide is ok provided we can do business. Unreal!

    • I agree Americans shouldn’t be participating in business in these countries anyways. State department needs an operation to fix it’s cranial anal inversion. Genocide is NOT ok and the gravity of this should not be marginalized by appeasement of vladolf putler.

  4. I admit that shame is not what I feel for Biden and his impotent administration, it’s disgust. What else must mafia land do to “deserve” this title, state sponsor of terrorism?
Reading the State Department’s rationale, we can come to the core of the reason, which is money. What a surprise.
Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan … they all would be disgusted too, by this administration!

    • Not sure about Roosevelt and Truman who set up the chaos in Europe post WW2. But I absolutely agree that Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Reagan are rolling in their graves with this crap

      • Well, my humble opinion is that Roosevelt saw the evil of Nazi Germany. He knew that we had to help Great Britain, and he did. Truman was brave enough to use the atom bombs, saving many thousands of US lives and even Japanese lives. Could Biden do this? Obama?

What is your opinion?
